Harbour Cottages
Harbour Green Cottages are three stone and whitewashed self-catering beach cottages, sleeping between two and six people, in a small development tucked away in a peaceful sea front location at the edge of the west coast seaside village of Ballantrae in Ayrshire.
The Harbour Green idea was first conceived a few years ago; the north harbour area was very overgrown and deserted and had been used as a fisherman’s dump with piles of old chain, anchors and decaying huts and boats. Old Fisherman’s Cottage was a deserted shed – unused since salmon netting ceased in the mid 1990s. So a plan was hatched to renovate the Old Fisherman's Cottage and build two more cottages to let to holiday makers throughout the year and be well absorbed into the area. Plans were drawn up, partial funding awarded by the EEC Rural Development Scheme and the three cottages were designed.
All the cottages provide luxury eco-friendly beachside self-catering holiday accommodation and are beautifully furnished with a fresh coastal touch. Each cottage has its own large private lawned garden, garden furniture, terraced area and barbecue. The cottages are close together and would make an ideal setting for a family holiday or for a large group of friends - it is possible for everyone to eat together in Beach Cottage and grandparents can even enjoy some peace and quiet in Old Fisherman's Cottage!
There are wonderful walks from right outside Harbour Green with the Ayrshire Coastal Path (www.ayrshirecoastalpath.org) passing right in front and the four mile dog-friendly beach is virtually on the doorstep, with over a mile of beach to the mouth of the River Stinchar to the South, and two miles of deserted beach to the North - perfect for long dog walks. The coastline is crowned with a superb backdrop of the ever-changing profile of Ailsa Craig and the mountains of Arran across the Firth of Clyde. The area is steeped in history and teeming with wildlife, including red squirrels, roe deer, otters and seals and is a haven for bird watchers on the moors and estuary.
Harbour Green has been thoughtfully designed in a traditional style from eco-friendly materials providing modern comfort and is a superb holiday location and rural retreat situated next to the picturesque old harbour within a conservation area. Spectacular sea views from each cottage focus directly across the bay to Ailsa Craig, Isle of Arran, Mull of Kintyre and Northern Ireland.
